I’d rather be busy
My best friend sent me a text message today. He was making a wry observation about his job and this led to the inevitable inquiries as to our weekends. We chatted each listing our weekend activities. Neither of us were slouches this weekend. His involved a little travel and the building of a new deck. My involved seeing old friends, Thursday and Monday, a nice way to bookend an extended long weekend. There was also yardwork, a zoom call to a friend who is an expat in Europe, a frantic bout of working on the new manuscript to rejigger the end right before it’s due to the publisher, chores and recording a podcast. By the time my head was on the pillow last night I wasn’t awake for long.
I woke up a little before my alarm realizing that I wasn’t back in Iraq during a middle of the night power outage, but rather had hit the wrong button on the AC and had just the fan on all night. Who says you can’t lose weight while you sleep? When I went outside to leave for work this morning it was already midday hot for most summer days. I questioned my decision to wear a black suit but honestly the Navy Blue one wouldn’t have been any cooler. Fortunately the AC in my car was working well and the ride into the city wasn’t a bad one.
After four days off the office hadn’t changed any nor had the job. The cases moved quickly until they didn’t. At my end of the state the much promised thunderstorm and potential flash flooding for the commute home never materialized. I wasn’t complaining as I drove home through the worst of it last Thursday. At work today, it occurred to me that even though it was a full day, it was still a lot less work than I did as writer or trying to promote my writing over the weekend. My side hustle had eaten up a lot of my weekend, which was why the bookended catching up with friends was so nice. If I sound like I’m whining or complaining I’m not. I am lucky to be able to do this and I know it.
